Thank you for this review, Tim! I’m reading this book right now and, as a Christian, struggling with her secularism in understanding and critiquing marriage. Her breezy points about Paul were what bothered me most. I know that he was not anti-marriage per se, but I do see how he can be interpreted as reluctant to encourage marriage. Nevertheless, I don’t see how she jumps from that to thinking Paul thought married people should not even touch each other!

Thanks for this review. It’s empowering to see that our doctrine is not just fancy teaching – it actually has practical value — value that is lost when empty modern blah is purported to be insightful. (Modern thinking has much value, but ignoring history and the Bible whitewashes all we’ve collectively learned.)

She was interviewed a couple of weeks ago on the USA’s NPR and spoke at length about this book and the back story. Very interesting. Probably still available to listen to or download for those interested and not willing to read the book.

The Biblical view of marriage makes me very excited to attend weddings of Christian friends. What a good thing God has given us!! What a good God we serve, that he’s revealed himself to us, and told us these things! Yay!

Good evaluation, thank you. I’m in a French Junior College and face the some problem. My classmates have such a bizarre view of sex and marriage, that I simply cannot grasp. As you point out, it is a worldview problem. If you start with creation and intentionality of a Personal Origin, you’ve got a whole lot of sense for marriage! Apart from that, every other explanation falls short.
