The Blind Side
It’s been a while since I’ve read a book on football, but I recently enjoyed the bestselling book The Blind Side by Michael Lewis. I heard about it because it’s a major motion picture due out this November, starring Sandra Bullock. It’s the true story of Michael Oher, who went in the first round of the NFL draft in 2009 and is a left tackle with the Baltimore Ravens. In high school, Oher (who is black) was essentially adopted by a white evangelical family. The book is party their story, and partly a very interesting story about the evolution of the left-tackle position as one of the most essential in the game, protecting the blind side of the quarterback.
So if you’re looking for a well-written sports book–informative with a very interesting personal story–you might want to check it out. (There are a couple of vulgarities in the book, so fair warning.)
You can watch a trailer for the film at the official site.
And here’s a feature on the real folks:
One Comment
Oher and his adopted family have one very large strike against them: He went to Ole Miss. Also known as the 8th level of hell.
