Obama Thinks the Stupak Amendment Is Changing the Status Quo

The President has said he doesn’t want federal money subsidizing abortion. The Stupak Amendment puts teeth on that principle, which is already in place with the Hyde Amendment. But the President thinks the Stupak Amendment is upsetting the status quo and apparently therefore opposes it.

Confused, confusing, or both?

Update: Ramesh Ponnuru: “In a televised address to a joint session of Congress, he said that the idea that the plan funded abortion was a ‘misunderstanding.’ Only now, when the abortion lobby is unhappy with the legislation, does Obama think it needs to be changed. But he’s not willing to state his position honestly.”

  1. Why would we think that a president who has in the past supported infanticide for failed abortions would be able to think compassionately about this issue?

  2. We should have no fear calling our President a liar, whether he’s George W. Bush or Barack Obama. He’s either got a terrible memory, is incompetent, or a liar. Let’s call him what he is. Nor should we stop with him. There are plenty of liars in Congress too.

  3. There is nothing in anything uoted in the article stating that President Obama opposes the Stupak Amendment. Typical, since the Weekly Standard wouldn’t be able to find the truth in a lunch sack.

    • The argument is: (1) the status quo needs to be maintained; (2) Stupak challenges the status quo; (3) therefore more work needs to be done on this provision. Seems pretty clear to me that he’s not in favor of it as is.
