As you know, I think the Manhattan Declaration is a good document giving a well-reasoned natural law rationale on some important issues, and I think it’s worth signing. But I confess that my first reaction was: we gathered dozens of our brightest thinkers in a room and all we came up with was a statement? I’m all for declarations and statements; I just hope it’s not all we do. Stopping here is an example of what could be called “left-brain activism”–appealing mainly to the brain with rationale arguments rather than also appealing to the heart through compelling and creative means.

To give you an example of right-brain activism, take a couple of minutes to watch the video below. It’s an ad out of Ireland, called “Sinead’s Hand.” At the end of the ad you’ll see the point and the sponsor. Obviously I don’t advocate the argument, but the aesthetics and appeal are compelling, and we need to think more along these lines.
