I recently had the privilege of visiting Concordia Publishing House in St Louis, the official publisher of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. What a great company filled with godly employees and a Christ-centered vision for publishing!

Before I left I made sure to stop by the bookstore, with one goal: to see if they had Paul Maier’s children’s books.

I’m a big fan of the work of Dr. Maier, professor of ancient history at Western Michigan University. His books Flames of Rome and Pontius Pilate are very helpful as historical reconstructions in a novel format. The only children’s book of his I previously owned was the hardcover, with beautiful new illustrations, entitled Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed the World.

Thankfully, they had all six of his biblical reconstructions for kids, and I could not be more enthusiastic about them.

The first set is a trilogy, retelling three major OT stories: The Real Story of Creation, The Real Story of the Flood, and The Real Story of the Exodus.

You can see sample pages for each: Creation, Flood, and Exodus.

Here’s what I love about these books: (1) they are biblically careful and faithful; (2) they are beautifully and accurately illustrated; (3) adults will learn as much as the kids.

I’m very grateful to have these books, helping me and my kids to enter the biblical world.

In the next post I’ll talk about another biblical trilogy for kids by Dr. Maier.
