I wrote recently about Sayed Mossa, a new believer in Afghanistan who has been imprisoned, beaten, tortured, and sexually molested. He has a wife and 6 children—one of whom is disabled.

You can see his handwritten letter from jail here.

What can you do?

I’m told that Sayed has asked for people to write him letters.

What effect would this have?

It would raise the profile of his case while avoiding the public confrontation that so often shames people rooted in an honor/shame society. In other words, it suggests to local authorities that they should end his prosecution so that this doesn’t spark all sorts of other problems.

The letter should be (1) short and (2) not mention the word “Christian” but rather address the situation as a human rights issue.

A sample letter is below.

Sample text for letter:

Dear Sayed Mossa,

I have heard that you have been incarcerated illegally. I am so sorry that you have been mistreated by some of your own people. Please know that I care for you and hope that you will be released soon.

Thinking of you,

The other thing you can do is pray. Workers there are desperate for the prayers of their brothers and sisters. A friend expressed his request in this way:

Please pray for all those trusting in Jesus in the country to find His infinite resources sufficient for these tenuous times.

Pray that they would not hide in fear or retreat to foreign resources, but push into Him all the more and see how He will stand with them (2 Timothy 4:17).

Indeed, pray that Musa’s arrest and trial might be used of the Lord for Phil. 1:14 kind of faith and boldness to be birthed in His people.

Pastors, encouraging your people to write and to pray in this way would be a good tangible way to express love and care for our brother in chains.
