[...] A Classical Christian School Reading List: Grades 1-3 — One thing that has impressed me the most in my time spent on the board for Highland Rim Academy has been the reading lists. Here is a sample reading list for one school’s younger grades. I hope to soon be able to provide a similar list for HRA. On a related note, Bradley Green’s excellent book The Gospel and the Mind (my review) is on sale for the Kindle at a mere $2.51! Green is the founder of a Classical Christian School in Jackson, TN, and an advocate for classical education. [...]

Thanks Justin. As a product of the public school system, here are some lessons that I've learned serving as chaplain in a classical school for the last year:

1. “Trivium” is not the object on which you place hot dishes to protect the surface of your dining room table.
2. Charlotte Mason has nothing to do with the heroic spider that demonstrates her literacy through web writing.
3. Tennyson never played at Wimbledon.
4. The feudal system wasn’t a complete waste of time.
5. "Monet" is not French for “currency.”
6. Longfellow was not a nickname for Abraham Lincoln
7. Napoleon is more than a pastry one finds at Gino’s bakery in Bensonhurst Brooklyn.

It's humbling to serve seven-year-olds who know more about Shakespheare than I do, but someone has got to do it!

Thanks for posting this, Justin. We, too, are blessed to have our children in a classical Christian school, not far from where your children go (Covenant Classical School in Naperville http://www.covenantclassicalschool.org/). The blend of Christ-centeredness and intentionally-designed academic rigor has been glorious to behold. As a children and family minister, I carried with me a bit of leeriness toward "Christian" schools for a myriad of reasons based on experience. Seeing the beautiful symbiotic harmony of Christ and the classical method at work has done much to squash that.

Thanks for this list, Justin. I love stuff like this, and I can tell it took a good chunk of time to put this together. My kids go to New Covenant Schools in Lynchburg, VA, which is a classical Christian school, so we're very familiar with many of these books/stories. But I'm always looking for more to supplement our own reading lists. Again, thanks for doing this.
