Kevin,

Great analysis of the text and our current culture and how it can be applied and how it shouldn't.

I do agree with your point 5 that Jesus is the ultimate Jubilee... but I think evangelicals and especially covenantal and reformed evangelicals tend to have a nasty habit of superimposing our views onto texts and looking for what we want to see... and criticizing everyone who doesn't see things the way we feel they ought. I can't tell you how many reformed/covenantal book reviews I read that just repeat the same criticism over and over again like a broken record... "not gospel-centered enough"... really?

Your convictions on the last point may be genuine but I can't help but think you almost tagged that last point on out of a sense of obligation or habit.

I'm essentially restating your final point in reverse... but I think most of your blog audience needs to hear it that way. While acknowledging in our reading of Scripture that the ultimate victory and climax of God's revelation is Jesus... many texts, especially in the Old Testament should point us toward living in embodiment of Christ's values through concern for justice and the poor.

Could you apply the concept of Jubilee to today's bankruptcy system? All contracts we enter knowing the possibility of bankruptcy of one of the parties. We are called to submit to authority, which allows for bankruptcy. We have a debt forgiveness example in the Bible. Why is bankruptcy taboo for Christians today?

Jubilee reminds me of the economic notion of Distributism, which is particularly associated with G.K. Chesterton.

The wikipedia article is fairly informative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributism
