Kevin, thanks so much for your distillation of such an immense topic. Recently I read a little more from David Bentley Hart, an Orthodox theologian, and author of, among other things, Doors of the Sea–a short but pithy book in response to the question, “where was God following the tsunami” of a few years ago. There and here (http://www.religion-online.org/showarticle.asp?title=3301) he has much to say about sovereignty, too, but takes great issue with its classical Calvinist conceptions. How might you respond to his comment that while God reigns supreme over all matters, that’s not to say that all suffering is necessary or purposeful?

Amen! When my wife and I had our first child miscarry last October it was a firm belief that God is Sovereign and that His covenantal and Fatherly love never fails that brought us to worship in the midst of our grief. “The LORD gives and the LORD takes away- blessed be the name of the LORD!”
