Monday Morning Music
If I could only listen to two Christmas CD’s each year (and thankfully no one has made such a scrooge-ish imposition) I would pick Handel’s Messiah (not just about Christmas I realize) and Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God (also not just about Christmas).
I started listening to Andrew Peterson when he was opening for Caedmon’s Call and had one self-made CD to his credit. He’s one of my favorites and Behold the Lamb of God is, in my opinion, his best album and one of the best Christian albums I’ve ever heard. One of these days I’ll see Behold the Lamb of God live. For this year’s tour dates go here.
In the spirit of Advent, I’ll be posting a few of the songs from the album each Monday leading up to Christmas.
Here’s the opening song “Gather Round Ye Children Come.”
And here’s the delightfully raspy Derek Webb singing “Deliver Us.”

Most excellent choices! One of the (many) great things about living in middle Tennessee is the ability to see the “Behold the Lamb of God” concert just about every year. It’s the closest I’ve ever heard a live show come to sounding just like the CD. Everyone on that stage is a phenomenal musician, which, when combined with solid theology, makes for an incredible experience live. You need to go!
there’s nothing quite Sufjan Steven’s set of Christmas CDs. some quirky stuff to be sure, but also some very moving renditions. my favorite is not even a Christmas song (Holy, Holy, Holy)
AP’s Behond the Lamb of God is one of the greatest Christmas albums in existance, especially of the “modern” ones. It’s a classic for me and has been (and will continue to be) included in rotation with my other Christmas CDs every year.
I totally agree. Best one out there. Going to see the show in Charlotte on the 16th! Can’t wait! I’ve been an AP fan since Carried Along came out. The guy is a poet. I think he’s carrying the mantle laid down when Rich Mullins died. Good stuff!
I love that album! The best part is the authentic way in which he handles the Old Testament. He gets it in a way that very few people do.
Back when I went to a Southern Baptist Church I was a child and a poor singer. I could only mouth the words. Because of the trauma of what the preacher was preaching I feel a little repulsed by public displays of religion. But there are many beautiful Christian songs and music, old and new. Thanks for bringing this joyful noise to us for the holiday season.
I hate to change subject but I will because it is important to me and I hope you too. In 1960 when I left the Southern Baptist Church they supported segregation, hate of Blacks, hate of other religions and denominations of the Christian faith. I liked Sunday School and I have kept that simple faith all my life. The Christian Religion is simple and only ten rules to follow. Believe Jesus died to save our souls, and that is it. No forms to fill out and sign, no masses to proclaim your self to, and no one to hate.
All the other stuff we hear shouted, screamed, and manipulated words to influence us is just marketing. Marketing for some church to gain power, money, and influence over some other church. They all should have the same message and goal. Read the Bible, do your best to follow the Ten Commandments, and Believe in Jesus that he suffered died for our souls. That’s it! So simple. Why do you try to make it so hard. Manhattan what? There you go. Keep it simple and you will truly lead.
I wish everyone the best and have a happy holiday season,
Bill
Thanks for your article on justification in The Christian Science Monitor. Thoughtfully presented and well-written.

Kevin,
I just read your article on Justification published in the Christian Science Monitor and I greatly appreciate it. You also enlightened me a bit on N. T. Wright. One of my sons who attends a baptist church has heard him recommended and bought and given me some of his books that I have not yet had time to read. I did not know he is an Anglican (apparently a different stripe than J. I. Packer and Martin Lloyd-Jones) nor of his defective views on justification. Thanks for being an advocate for the gospel in the public arena.

Totally agree! Thank goodness, though, that we can have more than two. Which means I get to add Sara Groves, and the new Bifrost Arts one I downloaded this morning.
Just finished reading ‘Why We Love the Church’ and greatly appreciated the approach! God bless,
