"If you are a good writer people will tell you. If you don’t get much feedback, you probably aren’t, not yet anyway."

I don't think that's really true. I mean, consider the success of absolute dreck like Nora Roberts, Twilight, The Shack, etc. Even ignoring the theological problems in The Shack it was just terrible literature. blech. Yet - it sells well, and huge swaths of people love all of the books I mentioned there.

I wouldn't mistake public acclaim or popularity with quality writing skills. If you want to know if you're a good writer, either find a really skilled critical reader, or other good writers or editors to give you feedback.

It'll be far more useful than someone who might never read anything more challenging than the Sunday funnies. ;-)

Yes, the Internet's changed the game. Now everyone who's online looks to those who've been online a little longer to see how they were published. I love it though. It's making the world a world of writers.

From the authors perspective, I think you're always your greatest critic. Keep up the writing.

I, too, thank you for the post. I'm finishing up a project right now, and as an editor told me, it takes nearly as much work to get published as it does to write a book.

I don't think you're fooling people. I read two of your books last year, and they are good. How many do you need to write before you consider yourself an author? Keep up the great work.
