However, it should be noted that God can save persons without their direct knowledge of Jesus Christ, just as the Canons of Dort say, 1.17: "Since we must make judgments about God's will from his Word, which testifies that the children of believers are holy, not by nature but by virtue of the gracious covenant in which they together with their parents are included, godly parents ought not to doubt the election and salvation of their children whom God calls out of this life in infancy." We might say the same about those with cognitive impairments, etc. While I think it is irresponsible to propound the doctrine of anonymous Christianity, as Karl Rahner and (in his own way) CS Lewis did, we have to leave room for the sovereignty of God, and not wander too deeply into what Calvin called the "labyrinth" of speculation about who is elect and who is not and who could possibly be saved. That's God's business. Our business is to be the church and proclaim the gospel promiscuously (to again borrow the words of Canons), and to all nations, and with urgency.

Thank you, Kevin. I grew up in a church culture in which, when we had urges that we didn't measure with Scripture, we called it being led by the Spirit. And the result was that we spent a lot of time "being led by the Spirit" because it just felt so more connected than looking up God's mind in a book, and it had the added "benefit" of self-justifying almost anything we wanted to think or say or do "for God."

May God bless your clear, Scriptural examination of this passage about the Holy Spirit to the recovery by many of His mind in the Scriptures and His mission in focusing us upon Christ rather than Himself.

I also love Lewis' work, but you've just pointed out one of the things I also disagree with him. I see this same teaching in another of his work: the Narnia's book The Last Battle. It's a GREAT book, but when he shows this, I didn't agree.

God bless.
