A knock on the door

“De verboden Lectuur” by Karel Ooms (1876) portrays a Belgian man studying the Bible with his daughter in a time of persecution. They are breaking the law, and they know it. They have just heard a knock on the door.
This painting hung along a stairway in the Belgian Gospel Mission when my family visited there in 1959. Even as a boy, I sensed how solemn and beautiful it was. Somehow the family got hold of a print, and somehow the print ended up in my possession. It hangs in our study here at home. It is beside me now.
May I be a man of the Bible. May I be a faithful father. May I be a loyal Christian, whoever knocks on the door.

Amen.
Lovely post. We often stand on our tiptoes and look through the peep hole to see who is on the other side.
But really, does it matter? If it is a friend, come on inside. If it is an enemy, then my life is in the hand of God. If it is someone in need, I can help. The hinge on the door opens inside.

Lions and knocks at the door. And I consider it a challenge when my wife interrupts my quiet time to remind me we need to go to Costco — pathetic, huh?

That painting really is awesome! What a great reminder of the privilege we enjoy to freely read the Bible and gather to worship. Oh, that I would joyfully take full advantage of that privilege.
What a beautiful picture and thought. What an amazing artist to capture the moment and their expressions.
