I presently am serving a church on a part-time basis where the focus isn't so much 'To God BE the Glory' as it is "I like this part of the church service, I didn't like that part."

I've been encouraging folks in the church to think in Kingdom terms. It's larger than merely the 'like/dislike' of what happens in church. It's also easier to have a congregation get on the same page since the word 'church' doesn't appear in scripture but 'Kingdom' does.

My desire is for them to see that they are part of something larger than just their like and dislikes. And I think using Kingdom Language is helpful. Plus, it ties in every Sunday when the Lord's Prayer is prayed.

The idea of Kingdom is an intangible ideal that can be filled by any kind of theological manipulation. In reality, the local church is the only earthly expression of the Kingdom of God. The local church is the only place to carry out Kingdom work. Therefore all para-church organizations should have as their goal to promote the local church. If one wants to promote the Kingdom of God, then one must promote, build up, encourage, cultivate and protect the local expression of that Kingdom, which is the church.

Thanks Ray. Good post. Sometimes, particularly as you get older and spiritually wiser, it becomes harder to accept the forgiveness of our wretchedness in the past. Thanks be to Christ, whose blood covers all of it.

I completely agree. Sorta.

At first the statement caught me off guard. I mean, who wouldn't want the to build up the Kingdom of God. I have the greatest respect for Mr. Ortlund. Believe me, I am a HUGE fan. I do think "unbiblical" might be a little bit of a reach. And the marriage analogy unfortunately breaks down a little, primarily to the extent that marriage is the specific illustration that Jesus used to indicate His relationship to His bride, the church universal. The local church is not "my" church, but rather Jesus'. I and every other person in the church worldwide are only one half of the marriage analogy - the Bride. I understand the idea he is communicating and that is where I agree with him...as long as we are all interpreting the initial statement the same.

It seems as if there are two (maybe more) ways to interpret this statement, the first being the presumed intended way. The second being possibly a more positive spin on the statement?

1. My passion isn't to care for and nurture the local body of believers. I am so disillusioned with the local church that I will focus more on the less tangible "Kingdom of God" where I have no accountability and where I can take potshots at local churches from the comfort of my Twitter account and blog. I will give up on the local church and spend my time and talents investing in parachurch ministries that are geared more to what excites me.

2. My passion isn't to make a name for myself or the church I lead/attend. My focus isn't to feed my ego or get into a "We've got Spirit, yes we do, we've got Spirit, probably not you" competition with the local church down the street. I am not trying to "steal sheep" because they aren't my sheep. Heck, I'M a sheep. I am relinquishing claim over this local body, because I am a steward and servant of this community, not The Owner. I am less interested in my vision for what church "should" be and more interested in what Jesus said His church must be. I don't want to simply "do" church. I want to "be" the Church. I want to see the Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven and I am willing to do whatever it takes to see that happen.

Just thoughts.
