Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Dear Lord Jesus, I’ve got several friends stuck right in the middle of important decision making. They need the wisdom, guidance and peace you alone can give. It’s a joy to bring them before your throne of grace confident of your audience, advocacy and authority.

First of all, it’s settling to know that you’re the present Lord who “opens doors no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8). And the converse is just as true… you also shut doors no one can open. Indeed, Jesus, you’re an engaged Shepherd not an absentee landlord. Even as we make plans in our hearts, you are actively ordering our steps (Proverbs 16:9). O, the freedom and peace this brings…

Secondly, it’s critical to remember than our future isn’t tied to making the “right decisions” but with trusting the right Lord. That would be you. We weren’t saved by our decision, Jesus, but by your grace. Why would we give salvation-power to our decisions now? We’d just as well lean on a wet straw as to lean on our own understanding and decision making prowess.

Jesus, help us know afresh… even this very day, that you alone can be trusted with the entirety of our heart—its longings, fears, foolishness, glory and groanings. To acknowledge you in all of our ways is not to make you Lord, but to recognize and rest in your Lordship. We can no more make you Lord of something than we can make water wet or chocolate good.

So, Jesus, in keeping with the wisdom of the Scriptures… in line with the truth of the gospel… in surrender to the occupied throne of heaven… I thank you that you will make straight paths for my friends…

For the couple praying about an overseas move, give them peace together. For the parents making decisions about the “right” school… free them from panic and education-idolatry by giving them greater confidence in you and love for one another. For those making hard calls affecting the future of people they love, be huge and present, Jesus.

For friends deciding about jobs, housing and health care… show yourself to be both mighty and merciful, Jesus. Write stories of redemption that will reveal your glory, and leave us reveling in your goodness and timing. So very Amen, I pray… we pray, in your trustworthy and beautiful name.
