I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. Psalm 130:5-7

Heavenly Father, this Psalm reflects truth written upon my heart by your Spirit. To wait upon you with my “whole being” and to put my hope in your Word… there’s no better posture to strike or safer place to be… yet…

Yet I can’t boast that I wait for you “more than watchmen wait for the morning.” I’ve had sleepless nights, but they’re not all filled with patient waiting upon you. Sometimes, like Sarah, I look for a Hagar to speed up the fulfillment of your promise, yet I only create more Ishmaels. Sometimes, like Esau, I reach for a bowl of instant gratification, instead of waiting for a sumptuous feast from you. Sometimes, like Samson, I go out in my strength, not in yours, and that never works well for me. Sometimes, like Peter, I take matters into my own hands—like cutting off the ear of the enemies of Jesus, forgetting that Jesus has legions of angels at his disposal. God have mercy on me, a tired, proud, impatient man of little faith.

Father, I do not doubt that you’ll eventually complete every good work you’ve begun, but give me grace to accept that your timing is Swiss. Give me grace to sit in chaos, because I don’t like the exposure of messiness. Give me grace not to be sucker-punched by vain regrets or assigning blame—two effective strategies of the king of darkness. Give me grace to hope and rescue me from the spin of hype—created by me or others. Give me grace to acknowledge what I’m really feeling, not just what I should be feeling. Give me grace to hear your voice as clear as a bell, transcending all the chatter and clatter of the interpersonal airways.

Father, with you there “is unfailing love and full redemption,” and nowhere else. I am in Christ, by your doing, and Christ is in me, by your doing. You are for me and with me. Who or what can possibly top or trump that? That’s really enough to know, in this or any moment.

In the coming days, weeks and months, bring great glory to yourself, in me and all around me. So very Amen I pray, in Jesus’ compassionate and faithful name.
