A Prayer for Christmas Day

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

Dear Lord Jesus, though you’ve existed forever in joy-saturated relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit, today we celebrate your coming to us and for us. Happy Birthday to the One created both “happy” and the births of all mankind. Angels “harked,” shepherds ran, and Mary pondered the very “good news” which fills our hearts today.

We welcome you as the long time promised and much longed for Christ—the Messiah. We’re to look for no other, for in you every promise of God finds its fulfillment, its unequivocal “Yes!”

We praise you for being born in Bethlehem—the “house of bread”, for we were famished and foolish—binge eating at many worthless buffets, spending our money “for that which is not bread” (Isa. 55:2). But you came as the Bread of Life, and you’ve brought the feast of the gospel to our souls. We’ve tasted and found that you, the Lord, are so very good.

Indeed, we praise you for entering our world in the town of David—Israel’s beloved shepherd-king. But what King David could never be, you’ve become for us—a Monarch of Mercy, a Governor of Grace, the Prince of Peace—the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for us.

Having secured our complete forgiveness and faith-righteousness, you care for us with relentless tenderness and persistent kindness. There is no Savior like you; there is no Savior but you.

We worship you as the King of Kings—reigning over reigning and working in all things, for your glory and our good. You’re the ruler of all the kings of the earth—setting them up and sitting them down at your uncontested discretion. No other kingdom but yours is unshakable, peaceable, and everlasting. Knowing these things to be true, we have a peace that passes all understanding and transcends all difficulties.

We adore you as the Lord of all lords—very God of very God, perfect Bridegroom of a most unlikely Bride. How we long for that consummate Day, when we will be made perfect in love—when we will see you face to face and we will be made like you (1 Jn. 3:1-3). Happy Birthday, to the One who has no beginning and no end. Lord Jesus, you are so easy to love and so worthy to be adored. So very Amen we pray in your matchless and merciful name.
