I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me. Song of Sol. 7:10

Lord Jesus, the Song of Solomon is one of the least verse-underlined books in my Bible. But the more I look for you in all the Scriptures (Luke 24:25–27), the more I’m drawn to its affectionate, intimate imagery.

To read the Song of Solomon is to tap into our deepest longings for passion, playfulness, and delight—knowing and being known by you. Indeed, you are the great lover of whom this book speaks.

In our best moments, our love for one another is a mere hint and whisper of the way you love us, Jesus. We are the Bride upon whom you’ve set your deepest affections, for whom you’ve given your life, to whom you’re returning with great joy.

This isn’t the Gospel I grew up with, but this IS the Gospel revealed in the Scriptures. To be desired is to be wanted, pursued, and enjoyed; seen and accepted, known and nourished, remembered and cherished. All this is promised and provided in the Gospel of your glorious grace. Hallelujah!

Forgive us for thinking any human can satisfy the longings you put in us for yourself, Jesus. Forgive us for being too easily satisfied with “fool’s gold love,” when you give us yourself.

Forgive us for under-believing the Gospel, and over-believing false narratives that insist you could never be enough. Forgive us for believing the lie you could never love people like us.

Dazzle and delight us afresh, with the only love that is better than life—your great love for us, Jesus. So very Amen we pray, in your merciful and mighty name.
