“What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? … How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11–13

Heavenly Father, you are generous with everything—fish, eggs, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and so much more. With the “awakening” going on at Asbury University and other campuses, it’s time for us to relish your generosity with the Holy Spirit.

You have already given your Spirit to each of your children (Rom. 8:9), and we are grateful for these many expressions of his work. By the Holy Spirit, you raised us from spiritual death, gave us faith to believe in Jesus as our Savior, and are now making us like him (2 Cor. 3:17-18). Thank you, and “Hallelujah!”

You sealed us with your Spirit (Eph. 1:13)—making us yours forever, betrothing us to Jesus (2 Cor. 11:2), guaranteeing our eternal inheritance (Eph. 1:14). Through the Holy Spirit, you sing to us every day of your great love and eternal delight (Rom. 8:16). Thank you, Abba.

SO, Father, we take the promise of your ongoing Spirit-seriously very seriously today. Seeing college students on their feet and on their faces—being set free from sin, guilt, and shame… being renewed in their love for Jesus… adoring, worshipping, exalting you… why would we not want that for ourselves? Why would we not want to be renewed, refreshed, released through a fresh “awakening” by the Holy Spirit in our lives?

Generous Father, we ask… we hunger and thirst… fish and eggs won’t be enough. “Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me.” So Very Amen, in Jesus’ name we pray.
