Really helpful and encouraging, as I am being tested to become deacon in an emerging church and trying to grasp the challenges and the weightiness that it entails.

Having served as a deacon for almost 30 years in the same church, I say amen to Dr. Moore's essay. A deacon is no more "just" a servant than a Christian is "just" a Christian. Deacon's are ordained to serve. That's what we do. As Christian's, we must serve with the right heart attitude. We are not the lord of the manor, the boss, or any other worldly terms. If a deacon can not serve as he leads and also lead while he is serving, then something is amiss.

As a deacon I must always, always, serve with a Christ like attitude in assisting the pastor in spreading the gospel while unifying the church.
