I love what the Gospel-Centered Life (http://www.whm.org/gcl) curriculum points out about this passage - and that is the following verse: "For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins."
The reason we stop growing in faith, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love is that we forget the gospel!

Honestly speaking, there can never be any effective ministry in the organized church as long as the status quo is maintained by vested interests obstructing firsthand and personal knowledge of Christ according to the Scriptures! (Matt. 6:24).

Thanks God for the internet!
