Interesting post. I am a White man teaching at a black college. I never really think about race. When you write, "What if a janitor were named chairman of deacons in a wealthy suburban megachurch, because all recognized his spiritual maturity and nothing else mattered?," I really wonder what IS going on at your church. I grew up in a white church that had ONE black family. but if he had been elected President of the Administrative Board, I would have not thought twice, since he was a member of the church, and not a black man. If that is not the state of affairs already at your church, stop blogging and start preaching. Really. As for wealthy suburban egachurches, who cares WHERE the church is, how WEALTHY it is, or how big it is? In fact, the bigger and better it is, the more the narrow vision is inexcusable.

The fact white Baptist Christians have to keep writing about this says everything. Just last night I was told churches around me 30 years ago preached bigotry and racism. Really. Really!! And we wonder why our teaching on gays is held suspect? The sins of the Fathers come to roost on the Children. In ways unforesseen.
