[...] Tim Keller’s counsel on how to respond when criticized (even wrongly) is very practical and very biblical. You can read his blog post about this here. [...]

Beyond needing to hear in my life right now. Dealing with a difficult situation where I am being criticized and pushed towards a direction I do not agree with. It is hard to see any truth within the critics point of view, BUT I know that they are right on some things that I already acknowledged a while back.

I think a freeing statement being made here is that you do not have to agree with everything they are saying, just be open enough to listen without a hard heart.

This applies to all areas of life, not just doctrine, and in that respect was greatly needed for me. Thank you so much. God is too good to me.

I found an extremely funny but true line in the article about Switchfoot that a "critic" posted following his strong opinions. The line was "thats my view from the cheap seats". we who are commenting would do well to take on this same attitude. its easy to respond in disagreement, and also easy to forget that the person who wrote the article believes they are following their God-given Call. rebuke well taken Pastor Keller, i even with good reason. i still disagree with some of the fundamental claims of the "Deep Church" book, but the mission of the book couldn't be any more God mandated and important to God's people in America. Some of the leaven described above has caught in my soul, and I would like to apologize directly to Mike Polhman if i came on too strong. Keep in mind that a lot of these posts are from people trying to discover their voice because we feel that we have no setting to proclaim the Gospel at all. thats our problem not yours. I'm sorry brother, keep it up.

Newton's thoughts make me consider how the fruit of the Spirit is connected. To have "self-control" in keeping one's identity hidden in Christ will bear the fruit of love, gentleness and kindness towards our critics. I am learning that my primary "far" idol is approval...which is inherently a "fusion of identity" with the opinions of others. Fusing my identity to Christ is the only dependency that's healthy. Thank you for this helpful reminder from Newton.
