The Gospel Coalition welcomes Kevin DeYoung, David Powlison, and Ryan Kelly as newly elected members of our council. Each represents the kind of work TGC passionately supports: robustly biblical, theologically driven, gospel-centered ministry for God’s glory and people’s temporal and eternal good.

Here’s a brief introduction to each:

Kevin DeYoung (M.Div., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) has been the senior pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, since August 2004. Prior to serving at URC, Kevin was the associate pastor at First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. He is the author of several books, including The Good News We Almost ForgotJust Do Something, and Why We Love the Church (co-author with Ted Kluck). Kevin and his wife, Trisha, have four children: Ian, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Paul.

David Powlison (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is a faculty member at the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF) and previously served as the editor of The Journal of Biblical Counseling. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an M.Div. degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. David has been counseling for more than 30 years. He has written numerous articles on biblical counseling and on the relationship between faith and psychology. His books include Speaking Truth in Love, Seeing with New Eyes, Power Encounters: Reclaiming Spiritual Warfare, and The Biblical Counseling Movement: History and Context. David is an adjunct professor at Westminster Theological Seminary and has taught across the United States and in Korea, India, Brazil, Europe, and Sri Lanka. David and his wife, Nan, have a son, two daughters, and one granddaughter.

Ryan Kelly (Drs., Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) has been the pastor for preaching at Desert Springs Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, since 2003. Ryan began his formal education at Liberty University and Seminary where he earned the B.S., M.A.R., and M.Div. degrees, and, more importantly, there met Sarah, whom he married in 1996. He began doctoral studies in theology at Oxford University in 1998 but withdrew in 1999 due to health problems and a financial shortage. Upon returning to the States, the Kellys moved to Denver, Colorado, where Ryan pastored for four years. He was a visiting scholar at Cambridge University from 2002 to 2003. Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate in historical theology with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His dissertation focuses on the theology of John Owen (1616-83) and is under contract for publication with Crossway. Ryan and Sarah are blessed with four children. In his spare time Ryan enjoys dirt-biking, wood-working, playing and coaching hockey, and, really, anything with his family.
