Here's another perspective--like any good father, God wants only the best for us. Since we have an enemy whose purpose is to destroy us, our Father wants to make sure we are able to overcome and defeat that enemy. Therefore, He wants to work with us to get rid of deceptions in our lives and to shore up our weak areas.

By the way, the minute we turn to God is the minute we defeat sin. When we seek God, He is able to begin to give us the knowledge, understanding, and wisdom we need to locate what is causing our problems and to deal with them. Sometimes, we may need to persist in seeking Him before we can hear what He is saying. This is not because God is holding out on us, but because we're not ready to hear what He has to say.

When we're thinking about God, let's remember that He is the most effective Father in the universe.

A very helpful article. Another pertinent Scripture that might have been drawn into consideration is Jude 21 "Keep yourself in the love of God as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life". Here is no denial of the fact that God's love initiated our entry into a state of salvation. But there is an allowance that believers are quite capable of acting out of character, and in such ways as to make God's love seem inappropriate because unrequited.

This is a very helpful article. Many years ago, a PCA teaching elder once told me he didn't believe it was appropriate to say that "God is angry with his people" (or so I understood him to say). After chewing on his words for years, and revisiting the issue in my mind by your post, I conclude otherwise. Yes, we are not under condemnation because of Christ, but it is true that God can actually be angered by his Spirit-sealed people. Example: Isaiah 47:6, which includes at least some of the elect!

Thank you.

I actually love to see the pictures of the authors. The reason being is that I am almost 60 yrs old, and it brings me to tears to see such young men of God strong in the faith. It is one of the sure signs that God's Word in alive and active in the hearts of all his people, whether they be old or young.

Never discount what a young man knows or can teach. I believe John Calvin was 27 yrs old when he finished his Institutes. I don't even remember if I could tie my shoes at that age. :)

Great article, Owen.

It's notoriously difficult to illustrate articles on spiritual themes. And I appreciate that photos suggest a certain level of responsibility for the contents of an article (or comment for that matter). But I do agree that the author photos are less than ideal. In fact, that's whenever possible I opt as the editor for an illustration that matches the article's theme. Check out today's contribution on 'The Tree of Life,' for example.

Haha, you got me. I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to come up with something.

That said, I do like the pictures on the Desiring God blog...it would take someone more skilled than me though to understand what goes into creating those.

Also, I might have a minority opinion about the pictures. What do you think about them?

What photo might you recommend, Henry, to accompany an article on this subject?

Hello Gospel Coalition,

I enjoy reading the posts here...but can I just make one suggestion? I've noticed that each post contains a picture of the author that is not related to the topic at hand. I've also noticed that this makes me subconsciously less likely to read the post, as it is often a picture of a person I do not know...as I said, this is subconscious, and has nothing to do with the content.

Pictures related to the topic would enhance the post, but it seems like pictures of the people might only promote a celebrity culture. Just a thought.
