I had a hunch that the film would be a disappointment...
From what I've seen, critiques over the 'net are very conflicting.

I think it could be to our advantage to remember Philippians 4:8...whatever is true, righteous etc. People make the decision to fill their minds with ungodly thoughts and then wonder why they have such a problem staying away from sin. It is written...seek and you will find...remember WHAT you seek (even bad) you WILL FIND!

I like your review for its background on Ridley Scott. I noticed you might miss Gladiator in the count. I always thought that his last roll on Maximus' dream of returning home to his family, with his wife and son waiting to greet him back, left a very poignant sense that it flowed from the director himself. A family reunion, after death. Perhaps, that's what he longed for. Or, to be precise, that's what we longed for. Then, if so, his negative depiction is actually coupled with his ideal view as well.

Zilch, it's been ok in London until today. And now we have about a week of flood warnings ahead of us. To rub salt in the wound, the hosepipe ban is still in effect (!)

Yes, I'm with you on plausible :) The basic issue, I suppose, is what constitutes plausible. For me, when I consider the universe, I see order, complexity, consciousness, morality. Then there's the idea that all these visible "effects" surely demand a cause.

Zilch, I'm sure you've heard all this a thousand times, but those are some of the reasons which make God "plausible" to me. The notion that no such "first cause" exists demands a leap of faith that I can't bring myself to make.

Hey Barry- it's still raining in London? Here in Vienna it stopped this morning. But it's good that it rained at least a little- it's been so dry here for months. How are you doing for water out your way?

Yes, I can see that simply believing that "no-one made God" is consistent- but there are any number of explanations that are "consistent". I want explanations that are also "plausible", and the unexplained preexistence of intelligent beings is less plausible to me that the preexistence (or whatever unimaginable timelessness) of some kind of primordial law or order.

Hey zilch,

Greetings from rain-sodden London :)

I think your frustration on that last point ("Now you know how we atheists feel about theistic answers to the question 'Who made God?'") is inevitable. For a theist to say "No-one made God" may not be satisfying to you. But I hope you can see that - to someone persuaded of God's existence - it is at least consistent.

Actually, to an atheist, it sounds like just about any religion. It's just another attempt to account for order by simply positing a higher order, one that for some reason always resembles a human being, who is himself, by definition, inexplicable. I don't see how this is anything other than wordplay.

The script does at least have the intelligence to recognize that the discovery of the Engineers only poses a larger question, namely, "Who made the Engineers?" Characteristically for Prometheus, however, the answer is something of a disappointment.

Now you know how we atheists feel about theistic answers to the question "Who made God?"

cheers from cloudy Vienna, zilch
