As noble as their intentions might appear to be, whenever catholics become heavily involved in political campaigns it puts an icy chill up my spine. One would be foolish to forget that regardless of the good intentions here, Rome does have a long history of enforcing her will through inquisition.

[...] Freedom Fighting Catholics I don’t usually have dinner with the Cardinal (just for the record), but on this occasion I happened to be sitting beside him for an hour discussing the interface of Catholic theology and current affairs. The context of his comment was the Department of Health and Human Services mandate. With an admirable measure of candor, the Cardinal not only articulated his concern for the threat to our nation’s religious freedom, he also lamented the paucity of Christian thinking on the issue. However, far from a negative bemoaning of the problem, he was strikingly enthusiastic about the current “discipleship opportunity.” [...]

Amen, amen! My mom is a middle school theology teacher in a Catholic school, and while I believe my mother does a great job, most of the catechism I was taught in school was horrendous - and my mom agrees. I remember correcting my theology teachers multiple times when they presented Catholic (or even just basic Christian) doctrine incorrectly.

If Catholics (and Christianity in general, really) want to have a fighting chance, good catechism is crucial.

Fantastic article Chris! I agree wholeheartedly!

Ross Douthat's Bad Religion documents not only Catholics disagreeing with Church teaching but also having higher than average abortion rates. Evangelical teenagers have sex at an earlier age and evangelical marriages are more likely to end in divorce (p 239).

Catechesis is key, and when the laity do not follow teaching it does not disprove the claims of a church in and of itself.
