You are exactly right; clarity is essential. In our increasingly post-Christian culture, words like “repent” probably would benefit from some definition. In the context of a testimony, I might say something like “Realizing that I was a sinner, guilty of offending God’s holiness, I acknowledged as much—what the Bible calls “repentance”—by requesting God’s forgiveness. I then expressed my belief in Christ’s death and resurrection along with my desire to be a follower of Jesus whose life is devoted to loving, serving, and sharing his good news with the world.” Good point, Brian.
