[...] How’s Your Bible Reading Going? “Maybe so far in 2013 your Bible reading hasn’t gone according to plan; it hasn’t increased or improved as you’d hoped. Let me suggest several possible reasons why Bible reading might feel weak and wearisome, and suggest some ways in which those weaknesses might be helped.” [...]

[...] How’s Your Bible Reading Going? - I used to be such a legalist about my Bible reading plans and when I’d falter, I’d despair. This article is encouraging, practical, and Gospel-grace-saturated. Perfect for the “February Blues” when you realize your New Year’s resolutions were once again a little too far reaching. Thank you to Ryan Kelly at the Gospel Coalition for this.
My personal solution to absorbing God's word in my mind is by listening to it, not reading it. I am a slow reader. I have listened to the Bible in it's entirety at least 6 times in the past 10 years. Every time I get more out of it. every time I do it a little faster, as my anticipation from prior "readings" builds. Faith comes by hearing!

Two points I would like to make:

1. A Bible reading plan that gives some breathing room in case you fall behind is always a good one. The Navigators reading plan allows for this, giving a day off each week to catch up or simply go over something you have read previously.

2. It is always a good idea to read A.W. Tozer's essay "Beware The File Card Mentality", in which he addresses the issue of simply checking bible reading off each day as part of a to-do list. Apparently he was big on not being bound to a plan or schedule. After nearly 45 years of reading the Bible each year on some kind of plan or time schedule, I am letting it go this year and simply pacing myself, taking it much slower, As important as it is for me to read the Scriptures, it is at least as important to allow time for them to read me. And for me, that means a much slower pace.

"Maybe you're compartmentalizing your Bible reading from the rest of your day."

One of the ways we do this is not reading within the context of community.

I invite anyone who think reading the Bible along with a community of believers would be helpful to join us at http://bibletogether.com.
