Another important milestone in his life was when his son was killed in a climbing accident. He was to have spoken for an important event at 10th Presbyterian Church right after that. The committee people called and offered for him not to have to speak. But he replied that if he was a man of faith (as he was), this might be the most important time for him to speak! That message was written down and has been in small pamphlet size for years now. Entitled "Transplanted Hearts," this message in booklet form tells of his son's death within the theme of his medical work with hearts.

Thank you for this article and the recognition given to Dr. Koop. One minor correction -- "Whatever Happened to the Human Race?" was published (the book) as well as released (the film) in 1979. 1977 was the year Schaeffer (sans Koop) came out with his "How Shall We Then Live?" which also addressed abortion at the very end. But, as you highlighted, "Whatever Happened to the Human Race" was a game-changer for the Protestant pro-life movement.
