I agree so much, cause man can not gain real success without God's cause and work in it. I don't quite get the real reason of the way of disciple-making, maybe this name is with some time-meaning and we just cann't duplicate literally. What is necessary is to keep God's iternal promises and words in mind, and help ourselves and others around to grow in God's love, that's going to make much more sence than endeavor of creating big success.

Thank you Pastor Sathianathan for a very well written and thoughtful article. I noticed on the TGC site today another well written article on Biblical counseling. I serve on the board of a ministry that acknowledges that these two vital areas have to work in conjunction with one another in a unified approach to "meet people were they are and help them take the next step". Please check us out at www.disciplebuilding.org. Worldwide Discipleship Assoc. Thanks to TGC for serving the King and His Kingdom.

Thank you for these good reminders. Many years ago, I became convinced of a need for teaching a profile of a true disciple if I hoped for people to be effective disciple-makers. The five characteristics in the profile are based on Jesus’ own statements about true discipleship. Each one will help define the task of disciple-making. If interested, http://thinkpoint.wordpress.com/2008/10/22/profile-of-a-true-disciple-eight-characteristics/

Godwin, thank you for the clear, concise, and helpful article!

Nate, God getting the glory and us remaining dependent on him will be inherent in the process, if we follow it as outlined above. Why? Because it is Word and Spirit centered. When relying on the Spirit-backed Word of God to change lives, we are by definition relying on him and giving him glory.

I'm seeing a strong emphasis today on the methods of helping people grow in Christ. There is a danger in focusing too much on what we are able to accomplish with these methods, and not focusing enough on God's role in growing people.

What worries me is that we can get so focused on putting the proper methods in place, that the system becomes self-sustaining. And then we find ourselves really close to "building in vain." Every "disciple-making" program needs to come with a reminder (maybe in every paragraph) that daily dependence on God's leading and providence for all things spiritual is required for any kind of real "success". Make sure He gets the glory because it is ultimately His work we are participating in.
