Sometimes brothers want to be Asian. My childhood friend, Derrick, and I used to watch Saturday morning Kung Fu movies then meet in the church yard to practice our moves. I think it went something like this: imagining we were the Asian masters but doing our thang to an R&B soundtrack.

(HT: Mockingbird)

But sometimes, Asians want to be brothers. Exhibit A: Northwestern’s Lambda Phi Epsilon Asian fraternity trying their hand at steppin’. Did I detect a lil’ cool Nupe influence, a lil’ “Ice Ice”, and some nasty Q thrusts? Whaaattt? What’s happening in the world?

Couldn’t post these without recalling how Black frat culture, steppin’ and battle dancing met the big screen in Stomp the Yard.

And back in the day (1988), Spike Lee released his School Daze joint, another look at HBCUs and the politics of racial identity.  Some of it is on display in this step show scene from the movie.  Viewer discretion is advised: a couple instances of foul language and brief sexual innuendo.
