Thank you for your thoughtful post. I think I understand your point: the reference point in reading the bible is God, not man. But isn't our understanding of God's (or the human scribe's) intent, practically speaking, still *our* interpretation of the author's intent? It seems to me that short of literally having the mind of God, all of us can only humbly say, "this is what I think is the author's intent." Which is not to exclude stringent and coherent rules of interpretation when we read scripture...

I would disagree with you on your perception. The American culture is rife with the 'how does this affect me' without ever asking, 'yes, but what does it mean'. I have clearly taught passages to people and heard the proverbial 'that's just your interpretation, mine is...' and then a line of faulty and really unbiblical thoughts on how this passage meant something completely different to them than what was clearly intended.

We are in a culture, in America (and I am sure across the world as well), of rugged individualism where the most important this is that 'I did it my way'.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I think that the opposite (never looking at how a passage is relevant to one's own life) happens more in American culture. I now live in Kenya and I have found my small group here goes for the 'what it means to me' part first even if I am asking, "what does it say?" questions. Excellent way to put to see the importance. Bless you.
