I think that systematic theology of those who disagree with historical/narrative approach should be called into question, because the Bible is written in an historical/narrative style. It does not consist of systematic axioms, in which one can treat as a math textbook. Having said that there are very good systematic theologians who agree with the likes of NT Wright. For example Greg Boyd, who is a systematic theologian who disagrees entirely with Pierced for our Transgressions. How do we chose between interpretations offerred by systematic theologians? I would say the tradition of the church is the best and only real way to be objective about it.

Trevin:
I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your website and especially this article. I have read most of N. T. Wright's work and listened to him online with the result that I think he is a brilliant theologian and historian, but is tragically misunderstood by people who have denominational blindness. I give him a thumbs up!

I'm not standing up against people. All I did was post an article that lays out Wright's view on penal substitution. I have nothing against the authors of Pierced for our Transgressions.

What we are seeing here is not so much a clash of theology, as a clash of methodology. The Reformed critics of Wright do their theology of penal substitution systematically. Wright does his historically/narratively. Unfortunately, Wright does not appreciate Pierced for our Transgressions for what it is (a marvelous systematic look at the doctrine of penal substitution). But neither do Wright's critics appreciate Wright's work for what it is (a marvelous grounding of this doctrine in historical context).

We need both methodologies. We need both types of theologians. And we need to cool down the rhetoric... and that includes Bishop Wright's.

Trevin, you amaze me with your courage to stand up to people who have made an impoverished, disembodied, lifeless, joyless systematic theology their god. Thank you! I cannot begin to tell you what a gift Wright has been to me, helping me tapping into the holistic and historically grounded truth of the gospel and scripture. The world is dying for want of this truth.
