A Language-Learning Tip
One of my more courageous attempts at speeding up the language-learning process came a little over a month after I moved to Romania in 2000.
I set out to begin learning common, everyday words – 100 new words and their translations per day.
It was not easy to learn this much this fast, but it was one of the better decisions I made regarding the language. As we got deeper in the grammar and sentence-structure in our class, I was able to fill in the gaps by utilizing a quickly increasing vocabulary.
The more words I knew, the easier I could understand conversation. The easier I could understand conversation, the more words I could understand from their context. The more words I could understand from their context in a discussion helped me better understand future conversation.
By this point, my knowledge of Romanian was beginning to snowball, and I felt more at ease in speaking the language, even if I was still making many mistakes.
