Very often reflection on physical life keeps me on track regarding things unseen. Our births were events that took place in a moment, the very minute is recorded on our B-certificates. However the maturation process is ongoing, dynamic and progressive. So may we ever distinguish but not isolate the 'birth' truths from the 'growth' truths of scripture. Not to mention the vast, cosmic eternal truths of the "why" of our justification. "Ultimate" is a word permeates my thoughts... I see it justification, sanctification, the gathering together of God's people into a kingdom are huge and magnificent but still not ultimate...God's Glory is...All is unto the praise of the glory of His grace...Things that are necessary must not be seen as equivalent with their final purpose as oxygen is necessary for life but is not the purpose of life. Sorry if I was too wordy. timshaz@gmail.com

Trevin,

Another marvelously insightful commentary. I keep finding myself being able to isolate issues that have been rummaging around my head for weeks upon reading your stuff.

Having said that, I've done a little riff off this post at Parables of a Prodigal World today. Hope you enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed this.

By the way, kudos on the CT article. Loved that one, too.

Grace and Peace,
Raffi

We live in a very exciting and yet strange time that bridges a past era that brought some amazing truths to light and a new era where we are recapturing some things the Church universal has lost.

A key verse that has come to me often lately is 1 Thessalonians 5.21
"Test all things, hold fast what is good".

Our generation has a great handle on the "test all things" portion of this truth, but we need some work on the "hold fast the good" part of it. When we get both of these, we can see the contributions of those that came before us, we can build on the good of the past, and then contextualize it for where we are today.

I am thrilled we are looking at different elements of the atonement. But let's hold fast to the good in the penal sub model.

It is important that we are creative in thinking of new and fresh ways to present the unchanging gospel message. Often times, we will fail. But God manages to take even our failures and do something good for his kingdom.

Its a difficult thing to attempt to contextualize. The tension of Galatians 1 (Don't change the gospel!!) and 1 Corinthians 9 (I become all things to save some) is a balance that produces challenges from every side. As followers of Jesus, let us continue to be full of grace, seasoned with salt as we seek to proclaim the good news to a crooked and depraved generation. Only may Christ be glorified and the lost be found in Him.
