I just happened to come to your site via Between Two Worlds. I will be back again. I was drawn to read the interview with N.T. Wright. Just a quick comment on something else and that is your disagreement with Piper over his suggestion that young pastors move at the pace of the senior pastor and his willingness to teach Calvinism. I think this may be where labels get in the way. The safe and best way (that Piper is directing him to go)is to forget the Calvinism label and concentrate on deep biblical teaching. The young pastor may not go at the speed and in exactly the direction he wishes, but he will be bound to the Word of this God we love and serve. If he pleads with our God, our father, He will direct him in ways that will be good; the way he wants him to go. In conflicts and potential conflicts we can not trust our mental faculties.

I don't think we can swing too far in our view of God's transcendence, so long as we cling tightly to his immanence, as well.
I also have found Jesus more precious, more close, more valued in my life when my view of God is bigger, greater, and more supreme, because it provokes a transforming awe to know that Christ my brother has reconciled me to God my father.

Great post, Trevin; I'm appreciating this review (as I do all your reviews). I share your concerns about _____-ites, no matter who they're admiring, and I do think the cult of personality is a temptation for every tradition and congregation.

Wow! What a great analysis. I am really looking forward to reading this book. You have given me additional incentive to get this book and read it for myself. Thanks for the hard work of sifting through and providing a sampler in advance for us.
