Hi Mark,

I think it's interesting that you show the Reformed side asking some of the same questions as the Emerging side. This type of identification can go a long way in helping these two movements talk to one another rather than past each other. You are right that some of the emphases of this Reformerging group help to distinguish them from the wider Reformed Resurgence.

Thanks for your comment!

Trevin

Thanks for the attention you have given to this new volume and to my contribution to it.

I do believe that much of what I designate as the doctrin-friendly stream of emerging does indeed belong to the Reformed Resurgence. My suggestion that they also belong to the emerging movment is based on the extent to which their identity and ministries overlap with the doctrine averse/doctrine wary stream of emerging, namely on matters such as community, mystery, the arts, narrative, the missional mindset etc. that I depict in my schematic (figure #1) in my chapter. It strikes me that these emphases and convictions distinguish these Reformed emerging types within the wider Reformed resurgence. That Keller, Chandler, and Driscoll belong to the Reformed resurgence is much easier to demonstrate, but do think that their overlaps with and sharing of emerging church concerns is evident and interesting.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Trevin, guys like Driscoll and other Acts 29 guys have, in the past, distinguished between "emergent" and "emerging," while using the label "emerging" for themselves. So, this may be where they are getting lumped together with the rest.

Thanks for the review. Always in need of more pieces to the puzzle in my mind concerning the Emergent swing. Have only read DeYoung and Kluck's, Why We're Not Emergent By Two Guys Who Should Be. It too was very helpful. And get this, I was asked recently in an interview for a student ministry position whether or not I was sympathetic towards the Emergent movement. I could tell by the look in the guy's eyes that my answer was very important to him. My response was that I feared it's dangers. I named a few. And I actually told him of the book I'd just read (mentioned above). I did not get the job. I'm sure their were other factors, but I can honestly say that that was the most awkward part of the interview process. I could tell that the Emergent movement was something that was very special to this guy that I could have been working under.

All this shows is with the time it takes to publish a book through traditional channels - the "conversation" has moved so far beyond the questions this seems to address it's ridiculous!
