Understanding the scope and purpose of the Kingdom of God, from eternity past to eternity future helps me to deal with these events. If God is King, then those who are against Him are in rebellion, and in any kingdom, rebels must be removed. St. Paul in Rom. 1 says: 19* "For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20* Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse."
Perhaps we make the mistake of assuming that all who were destoyed in these events were eternally lost. Not necessarily. Perhaps there were among them some who actually did trust God, who honored the King, and will one day, with the rest of God's people, experience the joys of the New Heavens and New Earth.
Just as God sends rain on the just and the unjust, even the faithful remnant might be caught up in a destruction of an otherwise rebellious nation. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Trevin.

I don't know when it is coming out, but William J. Webb (of "Slaves, Women and Homosexuals: Exploring the Hermeneutics of Cultural Analysis" fame [or infamy...depending on your perspective]) is working on a book for InterVarsity Press with the working title of "Brutal and Bloody: Justice Texts That Trouble the Soul." He is seeking to wrestle with this very issue and these very texts. As far as I know it is still in the writing process, but those who are currently wrestling with this issue or are interested in exploring it may want to watch for this book.

Thanks for the informative and helpful post. This issue plagues so many and, from time to time, I even find myself asking questions related to what seems a difficult level of tension between what I know of God's goodness and what I read of his will to destroy entire people groups.
