these really are great ideas -- such a practical blog post. i don't even have kids old enough to do these things with, and i still really appreciated the thoughts. we just had our first daughter in december and live in tanzania. our kids won't have the opportunity (largely because we won't afford them it) to play video games and watch tv all the time (but also because it's hard to do with such inconsistent electricity). i expect us to play lots of creative games, which is also a great opportunity to encourage imagination (and second languages) in all the neighborhood kids as well.

This is great. I love posts that give us ideas. Keep them coming!

We will often push the couches around, throw blankets over them and make them a tent and pretend it's a cave. That's where the dragon lives and we have to take our super heros to shoot lasers at them (or sometimes transform them into good guys with our lasers).

we will also pretend the couch is a space ship and we'll fly through space and land on a far away planet.. then we'll get out and explore that planet, find treasure, rescue pets, fight off bad guys, etc.

The other thing we do is play Treasure Hunt:

I make clues on note cards and hide toys and things.. i try to make it a story, but the real fun is the kids trying to figure out the clue. We'll rescue superman, for example, and they'll have to uncover 10 clues on their way. One clue, just as an example, might be something like "Go as Mr. Potatoe Head" - and they'll run to the bin, searching for the next clue...
