Friday Funny: Better Living Through TV
Continuing our series through scenes from TV’s golden age (last week was the auction scene from an episode of Dick Van Dyke), here’s a clip from The Honeymooners in which Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton go on television to sell a kitchen utensil.
The segment serves as a clever satire of the 1950′s infomercial. Unlike most television comedies today, the humor is not in the one-liners, but in the characters. The humor comes through the “slow build” – a run-through of the scene “as rehearsed” (so the audience knows the original intent) and then the live event (where the craziness takes over the scene).
This is one of our favorites. ”Can it core a apple?”
