Thursday Evening Prayer
The Call to Prayer
Arise, shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
Isaiah 60:1
The Request for Presence
Good and gracious God, come; come and abide with us, guide us, protect us.
Celtic Prayer
Confession
God, be merciful to me; on your grace I rest my plea. Wash me, make me pure within, Cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. My transgressions I confess; grief and guilt my soul oppress. I have sinned against your grace and provoked you to your face; I confess your judgment just; speechless, I your mercy trust.
The Psalter, 1912
The Greeting
You, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy!
Psalm 92:4
The Refrain
The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it.
Psalm 89:11
A Reading
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.
1 Chronicles 29:10-13
The Refrain
The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it.
Psalm 89:11
Evening Psalm
The kings of the earth set themselves against the Lord and against his anointed. He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Psalm 2:2, 4, 7-12
The Refrain
The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it.
Psalm 89:11
Hannah’s Prayer
My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is none holy like the Lord; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the power of his anointed.
1 Samuel 2:1-10
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
