God Threw A Stone

As I’ve said before, God speaks two words to the world. People have called them many things: Law and Gospel, Judgment and Love, Critique and Grace, and so on. In essence, though, it’s pretty simple: first, God gives us bad news (about us), and then, God gives us Good News (about Jesus).

This is perhaps most clearly seen in another incredibly well-known (and incredibly misunderstood) passage of Scripture: Jesus’ interaction with the woman caught in the act of adultery.

The scribes and Pharisees catch a woman in the act of adultery, and drag her before Jesus. Can you imagine a woman who ever felt more shame than this one? Literally caught in the act of adultery? Unfathomable. They tell Jesus of her infraction, and remind him that the law of Moses says such women should be stoned. Then they issue a challenge: “What do you say?” They’re trying to trick Jesus into admitting what they suspect: that he’s “soft” on the Law.

Boy, were they wrong.

  1. Jesus doesn’t mess around when it comes to the law of God.

    He presents it hard!

But His forgiveness trumps the law…every time.

And that’s good news. For we need it (His forgiveness) a lot.

  2. Indeed, Jesus did not mess around when it came to Sinai’s killing and condemning ministry of Law.

He crucified it. His blood atonement slew it once and for all, by nailing it to His blessed cross!! (Rom 7:4, Eph 2:15, Col 2:14)

And that’s the glad tidings of the glorious Gospel!

  3. Secure in Christ

This is just gloriously wonderful!! What a Savior!! Wow! Praise GOD!

  4. Hi Pastor Tullian,
This past winter I came close to ending it all…please read how God is using you as an instrument to heal me… http://christinamariehernandez.wordpress.com/2013/07/06/gods-instrument-jesus-nothing-everything-tullian-tchividjian/

  5. Christina,

I read your link. Praise the Lord that He is giving you a vision of how He really likes you and always smiles on you, even at your worst. One of my closest friends was diagnosed Paranoid, Schizophrenic & clinically depressed 25 years ago. Even after his conversion he was always super depressed even though he spent his days listening to and memorizing scripture and listening to preaching. It didn’t help. But God….13 years ago began teaching us together what Tullian is preaching and this brother’s mind began to change. I couldn’t believe my own eyes as I watched God change him. Now he is a cheerful encourager who seeks to bless the saints in his PCA church in Utah. He listens to Tullian over and over and tells everyone to listen. I wrote his story which depressed saints say they find encouraging. If you know anyone like that you should pass it on to them. Feel free to print it as you like. It is titled, “Thankfulness and Confession, the way to an overflowing heart.” You can download it freely here. http://www.ccmbooks.org/index.cfm?i=14114&mid=17&showid=14920

Blessings sister, I will see you at the throne of grace.

  6. Thank you so much Brad! Downloaded the story. Looking forward to reading it. It is so amazing how I found Tullian..I was reading a friend’s blog post and saw that another blogger left a comment, so I clicked on the link to his blog…he had a link with the graphic of Tullian’s book Glorious Ruin in the sidebar…I thought Tullian’s name was interesting and so decided to see just who he was. Found his church website and podcasts and my life is changing because of it. What really drew me in was his honesty about his past and his brokenness. God works in amazing ways! He is so Good!

  7. Does anyone know if Tullian gets the chance to read these comments? I know he’s a very busy man. I know he’s the instrument God is using, but I just want to make sure he knows how his messages are changing my life.
