I make Fridays a gift to my marriage. We protect them fairly fiercely, not neglecting ministry emergencies or other truly necessary appointments, but consistently cordoning them off from the pressure of weekly invitations to do other things with other people and often from the incomprehension of those who don't see the importance of our doing this.

Today Becky and I went for a hike up to Lyebrook Falls in Manchester and then had a pizza picnic in our favorite little park out there, serenaded by the rushing water.

Today I saw some truly great things. Rabbits chasing each other across a field. A beaver poking his face through the metal slats in a bridge. The lush green Vermont mountains against an azure sky. Quaint white clapboard cottages in the New England countryside. The one hundred yard swath of flood destruction cut through the national forest that was like stepping into Mars meets Mordor. Chipmunks scampering. Water rushing down a natural stone staircase.

But the best vision today was the look of joy on my wife's face.
