Islamic Suicide Bomber Attacks Churchgoers in Nigeria
TGC Blog | June 4, 2012
The Background: According to the news report, the Islamic extremist Boko Haram group was suspected of detonating the bomb at the gate of Living Faith church as members were leaving an early morning worship service. The explosion also brought down a wall of the adjacent church, Harvest Field.
The radical Islamic group Boko Haram has targeted churches, state offices, law enforcement sites and some moderate mosques in its effort to destabilize the government and impose a strict version of sharia on all of Nigeria. The Islamic extremist sect has killed at least 530 people this year alone, according to The Associated Press.
Why It Matters: As TGC reported in January, violence against Christians has been escalating in the country and yet the Nigerian government will not---or cannot---do much to protect its citizens. Boku Haram has threatened to kill any Christians living in Kano, a city of more than 9 million people. Unless neighboring African states or international coalitions intervene, the group, which carried out a series of attacks on churches last Christmas, will continue to persecute Christians unimpeded.
