Groaning, Waiting, Serving Till the Day of Overjoy

We who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly…” (Rom. 8:23). We will be “overjoyed when Jesus’ glory is revealed” (1Pet.4:13).

Lord Jesus, we live with a relentless, restless, redemptive ache. I’m feeling it here this morning in Buncrana, Ireland.  It hurts, but it hurts good because it is a work of the Holy Spirit. The “firstfruits of the Spirit” will not leave us alone or abate. They continue to “stir our heart pot,” reminding us that nothing and no one but you can fulfill the intense longings you have placed in our hearts for yourself, and our coming life in the new heaven and new earth.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. And help us, help us, help us as we wait for the Day we will be “overjoyed. We’re starting to feel like children whining and angling for a 7pm supper to be moved up to 2:30pm. Jesus, we tired of the brokenness in us and around us, so we increasingly sing the words you have put in our hearts and mouths, “How long, O Lord? Thank you for the song, and for the promised resolution to our song.

Though it would be easy to settle for less, we want what you want, Jesus, and when you will give it. On this Friday, September 13, 2024, we honor you as the Lamb of God, Prince of Peace, and King of kings. Until the Day of all things new and beautiful, give us deep peace and clear leading about where we can best serve you.

With whom are we uniquely positioned to share the Gospel? Where can we best spend the riches of grace to your glory? Indeed, don’t decrease our good groaning, but do increase our trust-filled waiting and our grace-filled serving. So Very Amen.
