“I’m standing at the door and knocking. If you hear my voice and open the door, I’ll come in, and we’ll share a meal together as friends.” Rev. 3:20
Lord Jesus, it’s not that you’re lonely and cold. And you don’t “knock” only when we’re spiritually cold, too busy to notice our heart-drift, or are in a season of prodigal foolishness. Here’s the glorious deal… you actually desire fellowship with us—not just in our “quiet times,” but all the time (1John1:3). When we’re well connected, you’ll take us into “deeper” communion. When we are out of fellowship with you, you remain tenacious in pursuing us.
You certainly don’t need our permission to enter any door. You could kick it down, climb through a window, or come in through the “crawl space”—but you knock on the portal of our heart each day—several times. Daily mercies, Gospel-manna, living water, your very self… that’s what you freely give us. Ignore your “knock”? That’s like lungs ignoring oxygen, a heart ignoring blood, and thirst ignoring water.
You know each of us, Jesus. You know how this prayer woos, rebukes, allures, and weeps over us individually. By your Spirit, make your desire for us impossible to ignore and unimaginable to resist. Restore, renew, refresh our fellowship with you.
If we’ve never been able to say, or if it’s been a long time since we truly meant it, bring us back to the place of declaring with joy and affection, “You’re all I want in heaven, Jesus. And being with you makes anything the earth can offer me seem empty and valueless. You are my heart’s portion and passion.” (paraphrase of Ps.73:25-26). So Very Amen.
