Making Room for the One Who Made All Things

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room available for them. Luke 2:4-7 NIV

Lord Jesus, no detail of your birth was left to chance, including having a stable for your birthing room. Nevertheless, the oft-highlighted image of there being “no room available” for you, deserves our reflection today.

How do we replay that inhospitable scene in our lives? In what ways do we knowingly, and unknowingly, fail to make room for you, on a daily basis? You made all things and fill the universe… how do we ignore or avoid you? You only intend to give us more mercy and grace.

Thank you for making room for us in your heart, Jesus. There’s no greater welcome or hospitality than the gospel. Indeed, we didn’t invite you into our hearts; you gave us new hearts—hearts that know and worship you. Thank you, today and forever. Our lives are now hidden in yours, and your life is now growing in ours. Oh, the peace this brings us.

Humbly and expectantly, we welcome you today, Jesus. We welcome you into the chaos of our hearts. Bring your centering peace. We welcome you into the things over which we have no control. Bring your reign of grace. We welcome you into our busy, chilly hearts. Bring the warming fire of your presence.

Jesus, we welcome you into our weaknesses and brokenness. Bring your beauty and healing. We welcome you into our fears and hopes. Bring your story-writing hand and heart. We welcome you into the place of our deepest longings and unknown future. Free us to love, trust, and serve you. So very Amen we pray, in your kind and welcoming name.
