Our Compassionate Father Cares For Us, and Through Us

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Cor.1:3-4)

We had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus.” (2 Cor.7:5-6)

Heavenly Father, today and every day, you are “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (2 Cor.1:3-5). When like Paul, we are restless, downcast, conflicted, and fearful, you don’t coach us from afar, you come near us in love. Though you can send birds to feed us, angels to deliver us, and strangers to “bandage” us, more often it is a friend to encourage us.

Someone damp with morning mercy, wearing the aroma of grace, bringing the compassion of your heart. Like Jesus, they don’t hide their scars (Jn.20:27; Gal.6:17), and are comfortable with weakness—including ours. Thank you, Abba.

Titus came to Paul. Jonathan cared for David. Naomi welcomed Ruth. Priscilla and Aquila took time for Apollos (Acts 18:24-26). Philemon was a refresher to many (Phile.1:7). Four nameless friends carried their crippled friend to Jesus (Mk.2:1-12). Mary, Martha, and Lazarus gave Jesus welcome and hospitality (John 10:38-42).

Father, thank you for our compassionate friends. But to whom would you send us as a conduit of your mercy and comfort this weekend? A call, a visit, a note, a text… it doesn’t take a lot of effort, and we don’t have to be in a great place ourselves, to offer a refreshing cup of your kindness. So Very Amen.
