“When you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”
– Jesus, from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:2)
Churches are teeming with generous thieves – people who do good in giving financially to others, but who inwardly relish the praise they receive from those around. Thus, they have given to man, but have stolen glory from God. Jesus says that this type of giver has already received an earthly reward. What they wanted was earthly attention, and Jesus declares that that is all they will get. Nothing more, nothing less. Their check may go through at the local bank, but it is considered void in the kingdom of heaven.
People give for many different reasons. Some find motivation in their compassion for the poor. Others see an important kingdom work and feel pressed to help out. Many who have been helped financially in the past want to give back by helping others. Some give simply out of obedience to Jesus’ command, while others feel guilty for all they have been given and want to alleviate their conscience. Whatever the reason, God smiles on those who obey His command and decide to be involved in works of charity.
Yet, Jesus declares that those who are giving only to be seen by others are actually hypocrites, rather than pious saints! In Jesus’ day, the word “hypocrite” referred to an actor playing the role of someone else. The performance was for the cheers and entertainment of the audience. Jesus warns against people giving for show, by claiming that they should have an audience of One – God the Father. He alone should get the glory from the good deeds we do. When we give to be seen by others, we are in essence, robbing God of the glory that is rightfully His.
What motivates you to give? Each of us should constantly be questioning our own motives, to make sure we haven’t fallen into the trap of seeking earthly praise. When we steal the glory from God, we lose our eternal reward in exchange for a fleeting moment of glory.
